Community Data for Lancaster County, Pennsylvania At Mentorhelp.org

Welcome to the newest section of the Mentorhelp.org website. This section is a pilot project, designed to present community data on youth development and prevention work for Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Ultimately, our goal is to present community data related to three different models for youth development and prevention work: Communities That Care, The 40 Assets, and America's Promise.

Currently, our pilot project will provide a limited amount of data related to some of the Risk and Protective Factors of Communities That Care. For this pilot project, the data will be limited to specific geographical areas, in many cases. Eventually, data on all of the factors and all of the localities in Lancaster County will be included.

The intent of these data pages is to provide useful information to program developers, program managers, researchers, evaluators, funding sources and others who need current, relevant data for grant writing, program evaluation, program development, progress assessment, or other purposes. Three Prevention Models

Communities That Care (CTC): Based upon the research of J. David Hawkins and Richard F. Catalano, CTC is a prevention planning system that helps communities develop an integrated approach to promoting the positive development of children and youth and to preventing problem behaviors, including substance abuse, delinquency, teen pregnancy, school dropout, and violence. Research has identified key risk and protective factors that have a major influence as to the likelihood of youth being involved in risk-taking or negative behavior. Based upon the presence or absence of these risk and protective factors, prevention specialists, community leaders, educators, and parents can identify prevention strategies that best match the needs of their unique community.

The 40 Assets: In an effort to identify the elements of a strength-based approach to healthy development, Search Institute developed the framework of developmental assets. This framework identifies 40 critical factors for young people's growth and development. When drawn together, the assets offer a set of benchmarks for positive child and adolescent development. The assets clearly show important roles that families, schools, congregations, neighborhoods, youth organizations, and others in communities play in shaping young people's lives.
